Yes, they’re real.

Unlike the Chicago Bears chance of getting to the playoffs any time soon, animal spirits are real. That’s right, I confirm, animal spirits are real. 100% correct or I’m to be covered in tar and layered with glow sticks and glitter. With that being said, the movie, “All Dogs go to Heaven”, suggests that animals do in fact, get into heaven and I believe they do. I think they do after their purpose is fulfilled. Our pets are united with us for a reason, wheather being a life long companion or with us for a short amount of time, there’s a reason why our paths cross.

I have too many animals or do I have the perfect amount? My pets include two dogs and six cats, Spike is the oldest, he’s my buddy bud. He’s a poodle mix and has never needed a leash. Though, when he was a puppy his springy little legs launched him out of the car window as we were driving, he was fine but that scared the shit out of me! Our other dog is a brand new one, Bella is a black german shepherd we adopted from the Humane Society, she was in a litter from Louisiana and the last one left so I know she was the one for us.

Now for the cats, beginning with Socrates, he’s second oldest and crabby as can be. He does not like kids, other animals, adults, eating late, eating dry food, cups with liquid in them, water in a bowl, couches, etc. I’m the only one he’ll sleep on and if I get to handsy he let’s me know. The next old fart is Hoover, we took him in when his owner passed away and I wasn’t letting a 12 year old family kitty go to jail. The Humane Society is awesome, but this old, toothless man isn’t going to spend the rest of his days in a loud, crowded cell.

Mouse is next, he’s a big boy. I got him with his brother Tank when they were kittens, Tank died suddenly a few years ago and it broke my heart. I feel him around a lot. Mouse is going strong but I can tell, he misses his brother, those two were inseparable. After Tank went to the other side, I found two sisters that needed to be adopted together, we got them from Whispering Hope and named them, Modem and Dial-up. They are the most adorable girls I’ve ever seen, one is incredibly quiet and the other is outrageously talkative.

Last but not least, Jerry Seinfeld. This cat is my son’s, another one from the Humane Society, Damien and Jerry have the closest bond I’ve seen between a teenager and a cat. Jerry was found in the middle of winter and got frost bite on his ears so they curled up at the tips. He’s also got thumbs, he looks like he’s wearing mittens.

This blog went off the rails, what I’m getting at is these little furry beings are put in our lives and when they have to leave, they don’t go far. I constantly feel Tank walking around the entire diameter of the bed as he did for whatever reason after Amber and I got into bed. Moose, our very first cat who passed from the same heart condition as Tank, (Moose was Tank’s uncle), when we moved from the apartment to the house, I opened up a box and said, “Get in Moose, you’re coming with us.” I left the box empty and put it in the truck and I swear, when I brought that box in here, it moved like something jumped out after I set it down.

I am 100% certain that our pets are here even though they have left their physical body, I believe that with all of my heart as I try not to burst into tears. I remember every single one of them, from the earliest age I can recall until now. They all took a turn watching over me.

Below is a link to my local Dubuque Humane Society and the Humane Society of America websites. They will always accept cash donations but they really need wet or dry food, paper towels, and volunteers.

* A big thank you to my good friend, Elaine D. for letting me know that the Bible says nothing about animals don’t get into heaven. I don’t know why I thought that because I know about St. Francis. I apologize for the mistake.
